If you let go of the handles the engine cuts out and the blades stop. This means you cannot leave the machine to idle which saves on petrol and also minimises the risk of accidents whilst you are working. You can choose to rear discharge the grass if it is too long to collect, the grass will be left to wilt naturally on your lawn rather than being left to rot on your compost heap.
